Mariposa County Library adds Kanopy streaming service

The Mariposa County Library has launched a new digital movie streaming service, giving library cardholders access to films, documentaries, series and children’s programming through Kanopy.

The service is available to patrons through the Kanopy app, which can be used on most smartphones, tablets, desktop computers, smart TVs and streaming devices such as Roku.

“We are thrilled to offer this to our patrons, and it is one of the things we wanted to do to celebrate our 100th anniversary as a library,” said Mariposa County Librarian Matt Johnson.

Patrons can access Kanopy by visiting https://www.kanopy.com/mariposacounty and entering their library card barcode and PIN. Patrons may also download the Kanopy app and enter the same information. Kanopy will then prompt users to attach an email address to the account.

Each patron receives 25 tickets per month to use within Kanopy. Most titles require two to four tickets, and users can view their remaining tickets in the upper right corner of the platform.

Johnson said the service includes a wide variety of titles, including well-known movies, documentaries, series and independent films, though it does not typically feature the newest blockbuster releases fresh from theaters.

Once a title is checked out, users typically have 48 to 72 hours to watch it. The app shows how much viewing time remains for each movie.

Unlike some digital lending services, Kanopy titles do not require wait times, holds or lines. Films can be watched by an unlimited number of library users at the same time, Johnson said.

Kanopy also includes a Kanopy for Kids option, which allows families to access children’s programming without using tickets. Adults can set a parental control PIN to prevent children from accessing the main Kanopy collection.
