Catheys Valley Flea Market to raise funds for historic schoolhouse repairs

The Catheys Valley Historical Society will host a flea market from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29, in the Catheys Valley Realty parking lot along Highway 140.

Proceeds from the event will support repairs to the community’s historic one-room schoolhouse. Organizers are inviting shoppers to browse for secondhand goods and other treasures while helping preserve a local landmark for future generations.

The schoolhouse was built in 1879 after Andrew Cathey donated land for an elementary school. Over the years, the building also served as a church, community hall and a meeting place for Home Guard aircraft spotters during World War II.

It was later moved to Catheys Valley Park after a community effort saved it from demolition.

Formed in 1995, the Catheys Valley Historical Society works to preserve the schoolhouse and the area’s history. The restored building is used for educational and cultural programs, including visits that introduce students to what classroom life was like in the late 19th century.
