Grizzlies answer heartbreak with a scoring avalanche

Mariposa County girls flag football rebounds from narrow River Islands losses with back-to-back shutouts

The Mariposa County High School girls flag football team has spent the past week and a half showing both sides of its season: the razor-thin margins that separate it from the region’s elite and the overwhelming force it can unleash against Southern Athletic League opponents.

As of yesterday, results listed the Grizzlies at 8-5 overall following a 39-0 road victory over Gustine on Wednesday night. That shutout came only 24 hours after Mariposa demolished Vanguard College Prep 68-0, giving the Grizzlies 107 unanswered points in two days and a resounding response to a one-point loss to unbeaten River Islands.

The recent stretch began Sept. 28 with a 7-6 road victory over Millennium. Two nights later, Mariposa left no doubt in the rematch, blanking the Falcons 34-0 at home. The Grizzlies then welcomed River Islands on Oct. 1 for one of the season’s most anticipated games. Mariposa had lost 12-6 to the Riptide on Sept. 22 and again pushed the unbeaten league power to the final margin, falling 7-6.

Against River Islands on Oct. 1, senior quarterback Bailey Costa completed 13 of 26 passes for 103 yards and a touchdown, although the Riptide intercepted two passes. Costa also carried 10 times for 84 yards. Sophomore Alicia Garcia caught nine passes for 84 yards. In a game decided by a single conversion, those numbers reflected how close Mariposa came to handing River Islands its first defeat.

Mariposa did not allow the disappointment to linger. The Grizzlies erupted against Vanguard on Oct. 6, piling up 225 passing yards, 156 receiving yards and 115 rushing yards in the 68-0 victory. The 68-point margin was the team’s second-largest posted league win of the season, just behind a 69-0 rout of Gustine on Sept. 21. The defense then recorded another shutout at Gustine on Oct. 7, while the offense supplied 39 more points.

Across the five verified games played from Sept. 28 through Oct. 7, Mariposa went 4-1, scored 154 points and surrendered only seven. The Grizzlies posted three shutouts in that span and held every opponent to seven points or fewer. Their only defeat was the 7-6 decision against River Islands.

A season of big wins and close tests

The season began with difficult nonleague tests. Mariposa lost 32-27 at Mendota on Aug. 20 and fell 32-7 to Hilmar on Aug. 26. Once league play began, however, the Grizzlies found their stride. They shut out Waterford 40-0 on Aug. 31, defeated Linden 51-14 on Sept. 2 and, after a 12-7 loss to Madera on Sept. 3, blanked Riverbank 31-0 on Sept. 16.

The 69-0 home victory over Gustine on Sept. 21 opened a demanding run in which Mariposa faced River Islands twice, Millennium twice, Vanguard and Gustine. The two River Islands losses — 12-6 and 7-6 — account for only a combined seven points of separation. Against the other four opponents in that stretch, Mariposa won by a combined score of 148-6.

Garcia, Costa lead the offense; Dakota Costa powers defense

Mariposa’s posted individual statistics show Garcia as the leading receiver with 391 yards, an average of 55.9 per game, and a team-high nine total touchdowns. She also leads the defense with eight interceptions, giving the sophomore an impact on both sides of the ball.

Bailey Costa has provided the running threat, leading the Grizzlies with 311 rushing yards and an average of 38.9 per game. Her production against River Islands — 187 total yards between passing and rushing — illustrated the pressure she puts on a defense even in a low-scoring game.

On defense, sophomore Dakota Costa has been the disruptive force her coaches expected. The reigning league Defensive Player of the Year has 22 sacks and 22 flag pulls for loss in the posted statistics, along with an average of 6.1 flag pulls per game. Her ability to pressure quarterbacks has helped Mariposa build a defense that has repeatedly erased opponents.

The Grizzlies have now recorded at least four verified shutouts — Waterford, Riverbank, Millennium and Vanguard — plus two against Gustine. Their six largest posted victories have come by 69, 68, 40, 37, 34 and 31 points, evidence of a team capable of separating quickly when its defense creates short fields and its passing game finds rhythm.

Mariposa is scheduled to return home Monday, Oct. 12, against Riverbank, followed by home dates Oct. 14 against Gustine and Vanguard College Prep.
