Grizzlies build league momentum, push unbeaten River Islands in two-week stretch

The Mariposa County High School girls flag football team packed plenty into the past two weeks, pairing a pair of high-scoring league victories with a narrow road loss that showed the Grizzlies can compete with one of the section’s strongest teams.

Mariposa County’s most lopsided result came Sept. 16, when the Grizzlies shut out Riverbank 31-0. The victory pushed Mariposa County’s league record forward and highlighted a defense capable of controlling the pace from start to finish. Holding Riverbank scoreless gave the Grizzlies a clean, confidence-building performance as they moved deeper into the conference schedule.

Mariposa County followed that with an even bigger offensive outburst against Gustine on Sept. 21, rolling to a 69-0 league win. The result underscored the Grizzlies’ scoring potential and moved them to 4-1 in league play, with Mariposa County entering the week averaging more than 30 points per game while allowing 70 total points through seven games.

The toughest test of the stretch came Sept. 22 at River Islands, where Mariposa County dropped a 12-6 decision to the undefeated Riptide. River Islands entered the matchup unbeaten and left at 10-0, but the Grizzlies made the Riptide work for it. The 12 points were River Islands’ lowest scoring total of the season, and Mariposa County stayed within one possession before taking the loss.

Although the loss ended a seven-game road winning streak dating back to last season, it also offered a measuring-stick performance. Mariposa County came out of the game 4-3 overall and 4-1 in league play, still positioned among the top teams in its conference and showing that its defense can slow down elite competition.

Next up, the Grizzlies travel to face Gustine on Monday, Sept. 28, at 6 p.m. The matchup gives Mariposa County a chance to rebound quickly after the River Islands loss and continue strengthening its league standing. Gustine enters at 1-8 overall and 1-5 in league play, while Mariposa County has already beaten the Reds once this season. A strong start, another steady defensive effort and continued balance on offense would put the Grizzlies in position to keep pace in conference play.
