Grizzlies open fall sports slate with confidence

The traditional Mariposa County Fair arrives this Labor Day weekend, and the Mariposa Grizzlies will help set the tone with a full and promising fall sports schedule.

The Grizzlies open their gridiron campaign Thursday night on the road, traveling to Sierra High School for a non-league meeting with the Chieftains. Kickoff for the varsity contest is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. Mariposa enters the matchup with fond memories of last season’s decisive 40-0 victory over Sierra.

On Tuesday, Sept. 2, Mariposa’s highly regarded girls’ varsity volleyball team will welcome Yosemite for a non-league match beginning at 5:30 p.m. The Grizzlies will then turn their attention to defending their Southern League crown when they host Delhi’s Hawks on Sept. 8 in the MCHS Loyd Hobby Gymnasium. That league opener is set for 6 p.m.

Mariposa comes into the early stretch with momentum after earning a strong non-league win over Central Valley on the road last week.

The MCHS girls’ flag football team is also moving quickly into the heart of its schedule. After last week’s 32-7 setback against Hilmar’s Yellowjackets, the Grizzlies traveled to Waterford on Monday afternoon and will visit Linden tomorrow for a 6 p.m. league opener. They return home Thursday at 6 p.m. to face Madera in another league contest.

The football program has every reason for optimism after finishing in a three-way tie for the league title last season and compiling an impressive 9-2 record.
