John C. Fremont Healthcare District marks 75 years of care, community and commitment

For 75 years, John C. Fremont Healthcare District has stood as a cornerstone of health care in Mariposa County. This September, the District will invite the community to celebrate that legacy — and the future it continues to build — during a 75th Anniversary Community Open House.

The public event will be held Thursday, September 24, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the front lawn of John C. Fremont Hospital, 5189 Hospital Road in Mariposa. The celebration is being presented in partnership with the Mariposa County Chamber of Commerce’s Network at Night.

Since opening in 1951, John C. Fremont Healthcare District has served generations of residents across Mariposa County, growing with the region and adapting to the changing needs of the community. The anniversary gathering will offer residents, employees, former staff members, patients, families and community partners a chance to reflect on that history and look ahead to the next chapter of local health care.

We’re excited to bring everyone together to celebrate that history and look forward to what comes next.”

District leaders said the Open House was designed not only to recognize a milestone, but also to honor the people whose service, memories and support have shaped John C. Fremont over the decades.

“When we started talking about how to recognize 75 years, I really wanted it to be more than simply acknowledging the milestone,” said Zack Peckinpah, Public Information Officer for John C. Fremont Healthcare District. “John C. Fremont has been part of this community for generations, and so many people have a connection to the District. This felt like an opportunity to bring everyone together, celebrate those memories and the people who got us here, and give the community a chance to be part of what comes next.”

The partnership with Network at Night brings together two organizations with long ties to Mariposa and a shared commitment to keeping the community connected.

For decades, our organizations have worked alongside one another in support of the Mariposa community, and it’s an honor to continue that partnership as we celebrate this milestone together,” said Kari Kisela, Mariposa County Chamber of Commerce.

Guests may stop by anytime during the two-hour event. The evening will feature raffle prizes, historic photographs and memories, opportunities to meet District leadership, light appetizers and refreshments, beer and wine with the Mariposa Chamber, family-friendly activities, hospital tours and a celebration of the people who have made 75 years of local care possible.

Current and former employees, patients and families, community partners, Chamber members and all residents are encouraged to attend.

The District also plans to celebrate its 75th anniversary during the Mariposa County Fair and Labor Day Parade, September 4–7, helping build momentum toward the September 24 Open House.

John C. Fremont Healthcare District traces its roots to 1947, when Mariposa residents voted to create a hospital district so the community could pursue federal, state and county funding for a local hospital. The hospital opened in 1951 and has since become Mariposa County’s only hospital, providing emergency care and other essential services to residents and visitors, including those traveling to Yosemite National Park.

In recent years, the District’s future has also been shaped by California’s hospital seismic safety requirements. Following the Northridge earthquake, Senate Bill 1953 required hospitals across the state to meet stronger earthquake safety standards or risk losing the ability to provide acute care after the 2030 deadline. John C. Fremont Hospital does not meet those standards, and the District has said it must either build a new hospital or retrofit the existing facility to remain in compliance.

Voters first considered Measure N in November 2020, a proposed 1% transactions and use tax intended to raise about $2.6 million annually for emergency medical access, seismic and building upgrades, facility improvements and recruitment needs. Although Measure N received 63.23% support, it did not meet the two-thirds threshold required for approval and was defeated.

The effort continued with Measure O, a citizen-initiated 1% sales tax for 40 years to fund the design, construction and equipping of a new John C. Fremont hospital that meets applicable seismic safety and building standards, while also allowing existing facilities to be modified or repurposed to better serve local health care needs. Measure O was approved by voters in June 2022 with 69.62% support.

The District has since continued planning for a future hospital facility. As of its April 2026 project update, John C. Fremont Healthcare District reported that initial public strategic planning meetings had been completed, community input was helping guide service and facility planning, and design development and regulatory review with state agencies were in progress. The reconstruction effort is intended to position the hospital to meet California’s 2030 seismic requirements while preserving local access to emergency and essential health care for Mariposa County.
