Unbeaten Grizzlies, Bullfrogs set for early-season test

ANGELS CAMP — Mariposa County High School will try to continue its strong start Friday night when the Grizzlies travel to Bret Harte High School for a non-league football game against the Bullfrogs.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Bret Harte High School. Mariposa County enters the matchup at 1-0, while Bret Harte is 2-0, giving the game an early-season meeting of undefeated teams.

The Grizzlies have shown the more productive offense so far, averaging 400 total yards per game, including 291 yards on the ground. Bret Harte has been steadier than spectacular offensively, averaging 212.5 total yards per game, but the Bullfrogs have still found ways to win behind a 26-point scoring average.

The key matchup could come between Mariposa County running back and linebacker Rusty Bull and Bret Harte quarterback and safety Jeshua Wahlman. Bull has been a major part of the Grizzlies’ ground game, averaging 182 rushing yards per game, while Wahlman leads the Bullfrogs in total yardage and adds 100.5 passing yards per game.

Bret Harte also has a receiving threat in Hensley Speyer, who is averaging 60 receiving yards per game. His production gives the Bullfrogs a downfield option if they need to keep pace with Mariposa County’s more run-heavy attack.

Mariposa County appears to hold the statistical edge, particularly in rushing production, total offense and scoring average. One published projection favors the Grizzlies, 39-14, and gives them an 88 percent chance to win.

Still, Bret Harte’s unbeaten record and home-field setting make Friday night a meaningful test. If the Bullfrogs can slow Mariposa County’s running game and force the Grizzlies into longer-yardage situations, they could make the matchup far more competitive than the numbers suggest.
