Mariposa County to mark 9/11 anniversary with memorial ceremony
Community members are invited to gather Thursday for a memorial ceremony recognizing the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The event, presented by the Mariposa County Sheriff’s Office, will begin at 10 a.m. at Mariposa Arts Park, adjacent to Highway 140.
Light refreshments will be served. Organizers said speakers with ties to the attacks have been invited to address those in attendance.
“Never Forget is a powerful statement. Here we are, 25 years later, and it is an honor to ensure those words continue to echo throughout our community and country. I hope the unity we feel here in Mariposa is felt across our nation, and that the families forever impacted by September 11th know that we remember them, we honor them, and we continue to pray for them. We will never forget,” said Mariposa County Sheriff Jeremy Briese.
The Sept. 11 attacks were carried out by 19 terrorists associated with al-Qaeda, who hijacked four commercial airplanes on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001. Two planes struck the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, a third hit the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a fourth crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers and crew members fought back.
The attacks killed 2,977 people and remain the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil. Among those who died were office workers, airline passengers and crew members, military and civilian personnel at the Pentagon, and hundreds of first responders who rushed into danger as others fled.
In the years since, Sept. 11 has become a day of remembrance across the country, marked by ceremonies, moments of silence and community gatherings honoring those who were lost, those who survived and those who served in the rescue and recovery efforts.
