Grizzlies rebound with sweep, look to keep Southern League push on track

Mariposa County High School’s girls volleyball team bounced back quickly from a non-league setback, sweeping Stone Ridge Christian 3-0 on Tuesday to improve to 16-7 overall and continue its strong Southern League start.

The Grizzlies’ latest win came at home against the Knights, who entered the matchup at 3-9. Available team statistics from the match showed Mariposa County averaging 12.3 kills per set with a .191 hitting percentage and seven total blocks, a balanced line that reflected both offensive efficiency and front-row control.

A day earlier, Mariposa County took a 3-0 loss at Minarets on Monday, Sept. 21. In that match, the Grizzlies finished with 9.3 kills per set, a .122 hitting percentage and three total blocks. The quick turnaround against Stone Ridge Christian helped Mariposa County steady itself after that loss and return to its winning form in league play.

Before the Minarets match, the Grizzlies had built momentum with a five-match winning streak that included a 3-0 Southern League win over Waterford on Thursday, Sept. 17, a 3-1 non-league victory at Chowchilla on Sept. 16 and a 3-0 league sweep at Modesto Christian on Sept. 15. Earlier league sweeps over Delhi and Gustine helped establish Mariposa County near at the top of the Southern League race.

Season leaders listed for the Grizzlies include sophomore outside hitter Kylie Williams at 3.0 kills per set and 163 total kills, senior outside hitter Gillian Pioske with a .232 hitting percentage and 156 kills, junior libero Abby Beery at 3.9 digs per set, junior middle blocker Zoey Hofstee with nine total blocks, and senior setter Emma Pioske with 486 assists and 47 listed aces. Emma Pioske was also listed among the team’s top servers at 0.8 aces per set.

Next up, Mariposa County is scheduled to visit Denair for a Southern League match at 6 p.m. today. The Grizzlies then have another league home match on the schedule against Le Grand at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28. Against Denair, Mariposa County will try to carry the blocking and serving balance from the Stone Ridge Christian sweep into another key league road test.
