Library Con returns to Mariposa County Library

The Mariposa County Library will host its second annual Library Con on Saturday, Oct. 10, bringing comic books, pop culture activities and family-friendly events back to the library after last year’s inaugural gathering drew dozens of attendees.

The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the library, 4978 10th St. No registration is required.

This year’s featured guest will be artist Sarah Leuver, whose work has been published by DC Comics. Leuver’s newest work, “Supergirl’s Family Vacation,” was released earlier this year.

Leuver will travel from the Bay Area to meet fans and give a presentation about her work.

Library Con will also include pop culture discussions, trivia, a family-friendly costume contest and giveaways.

Mariposa County Librarian Matt Johnson said comic books can help encourage young readers while also appealing to adults.

“Comic books are a great way for young people to become interested in reading or to practice their reading skills, and they’re fun for adults to read as well,” Johnson said.

“We had a lot of fun last year and the community seemed to react positively to the event,” Johnson said. “We are always trying to come up with events like this to offer to our county.”

Miniature con planned for North County

A smaller version of the convention will be held for the Coulterville and Greeley Hill communities from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Red Cloud Library.

Free comic books will be available to patrons who visit the library, and attendees will be able to take selfies with several superheroes. The event is free and does not require registration.

Patrons are invited to wear family-friendly, library-appropriate apparel related to pop culture. The Red Cloud Library is located at 10332-C Fiske Road.
