Mariposa County Library to mark 100 years with community celebration

The Mariposa County Library will celebrate a century of service this fall with a free community event recognizing the library’s long-standing role as a place for learning, connection and local history.

The anniversary celebration is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 13, from 4-7 p.m., in partnership with the Mariposa Friends of the Library.

The milestone traces back to 1926, when a county library system was first established in Mariposa County. In the decades since, the library has grown from a basic lending and reference service into a countywide resource that supports readers, students, families, researchers and visitors.

Today, the system includes multiple branch locations and connects patrons to materials across the San Joaquin Valley Library System. The Mariposa branch also serves as a local research stop, with access to resources such as historic records, reflecting the library’s continuing importance to community memory and county heritage.

The event will feature a 1920s theme in honor of the era when the county library system began. Guests are invited to attend in 1920s attire if they choose. Music from the period will be played, and hors d’oeuvres will be served.

Library staff will highlight current services, including access to books, movies, programs, technology and regional library resources, and will be available to answer questions from community members.

Games and activities for all ages will be offered throughout the evening. The Friends of the Library will host an information table and accept donations from those who would like to support library programs and services.

“This library belongs to the community, and we want as many people to attend as possible,” said Mariposa County Librarian Matt Johnson. “The library has meant many different things to people over the years. We want those who have benefited from the library to attend, and we also welcome anyone who is curious and wants to learn more.”
