Mariposa’s flag football team finds its footing after early tests
The Mariposa County High School girls flag football team entered the season with a championship standard to defend and a new set of early tests to measure where it stands.
Through the first stretch of the schedule, the Grizzlies have shown both the scoring punch that made them a league contender and the areas they will look to sharpen as Southern Athletic League play resumes. MaxPreps listed Mariposa County at 2-2 as of Sept. 14, with no additional game result posted after the Sept. 3 loss to Madera and the next scheduled contest set for Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Riverbank.
The turnaround began Aug. 31 at Waterford, where Mariposa County delivered its most complete performance of the young season in a 40-0 shutout of the Wildcats. The win was a sharp response after the Grizzlies had been held to seven points in their previous game, and it underscored the value of a defense capable of putting an opponent away when the offense gets rolling.
Two days later, the Grizzlies followed with another high-scoring effort, beating Linden 51-14 on Sept. 2. The back-to-back victories moved Mariposa County above .500 and restored momentum after an uneven start. More importantly, the wins showed the Grizzlies still have the explosiveness to separate quickly from league opponents.
The latest posted result remains the Sept. 3 matchup against Madera, a lower-scoring battle in which Mariposa County fell 12-7. The loss dropped the Grizzlies to 2-2 overall, according to MaxPreps, but it also offered a more competitive measuring stick than the scoreboard alone might suggest. After piling up 91 points over the previous two games, the Grizzlies were limited to one touchdown against the Coyotes.
For a program trying to defend its place near the top of the league, the early results have presented a useful snapshot: Mariposa County can score in bunches, can overwhelm opponents when its defense is locked in and still has room to grow in tight games against stronger competition.
With league play continuing, the Grizzlies’ next challenge will be turning those flashes into consistency. Mariposa County is scheduled to play at Riverbank on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 6 p.m., a road league test.
