MCHS volleyball squad steamrolls league foes

The Mariposa County High School volleyball team has pushed its 2026 season record to 12-6 overall and 2-0 in Southern League play after adding a league sweep at Gustine and a strong weekend showing at the 31st Annual Central California Classic. Since opening league play with a 3-0 win over Delhi on Sept. 8, the Grizzlies have gone 6-2, including four tournament wins across Friday and Saturday.

Fast start at the season-opening tournament

Mariposa County began the season on Aug. 22 with a busy tournament slate, winning its first three matches before dropping two later in the day. The Grizzlies swept Riverbank, Gregori and Buhach Colony by 2-0 scores, then lost a tight 2-1 match to Oakdale and a 2-0 match to Hilmar. The Gregori win was especially dominant, with Mariposa County taking the sets 25-7 and 25-12. They bounced back with a 3-1 road win over Orestimba on Aug. 31, then fell 3-1 at home to Yosemite on Sept. 2. Two days later, the Grizzlies traveled to Gustine and swept the Reds 25-8, 25-13 and 25-14. On Saturday, they defeated Sunnyside 2-0, lost to El Capitan 2-0, then finished the weekend with back-to-back wins over Central Catholic and Golden Valley. The Central Catholic match went three sets, with Mariposa County rallying after a 25-21 opening-set loss to win 25-11 and 15-9. On the schedule

The Grizzlies return to Southern League play this week with a road match at Modesto Christian today, followed by a Sept. 16 trip to Chowchilla and a Sept. 17 home match against Waterford. With a 2-0 league start and a winning weekend behind them, Mariposa has shown it can handle both league expectations and the quick turnaround of tournament play, and the coming stretch will test whether the Grizzlies can keep building consistency against familiar Southern League opponents.
