Grizzlies rule Southern League as dominant run gathers force

Mariposa County High School’s varsity girls volleyball team has turned the Southern League race into a weekly display of control, pairing relentless serving and balanced attacking with a record that leaves no doubt about who sets the standard.

Through Oct. 6, the Grizzlies were 21-8 overall, 10-0 in league play and alone in first place. They had won 58 sets while dropping 25 across a schedule that included league matches, nonleague tests and tournament play. The two-time defending Southern League champions had swept eight of their 10 league opponents and surrendered only two league sets all season.

The latest surge began Sept. 28 with a 3-0 home victory over Le Grand. Mariposa overwhelmed the Bulldogs 25-6, 25-11 and 25-11, allowing only 28 points in the match. Two nights later, the Grizzlies swept Denair 25-14, 25-13 and 25-11. Setter Emma Pioske directed that win with 30 assists, three aces and a solo block, while senior outside hitter Gillian Pioske supplied 10 kills and four digs.

Mariposa then traveled to Delhi on Oct. 1 and answered an opening-set loss with three decisive wins. After Delhi took the first set 25-21, the Grizzlies responded 25-12, 25-11 and 25-18 for a 3-1 victory. Emma Pioske finished with 34 assists, nine digs and five kills. Libero Abby Beery added 13 digs and three aces as Mariposa extended its league winning streak.

The Grizzlies’ only setback during the span came outside the Southern League. Sierra of Tollhouse, which entered the week with one of the strongest records in the region, defeated Mariposa 3-1 on Oct. 5. The loss ended Mariposa’s five-match winning streak but did nothing to disturb its perfect league mark.

Mariposa immediately returned to form Oct. 6, sweeping Gustine 3-0 at home. Emma Pioske again controlled the offense, handing out 39 assists and collecting four digs. The victory lifted the Grizzlies to 10-0 in the Southern League and reinforced the depth of an attack that has repeatedly kept opponents from settling into matches.

Season statistics available through the latest published update show sophomore outside hitter Kylie Williams leading Mariposa at 2.9 kills per set. Gillian Pioske owned the team’s best hitting percentage at .243, Grace Beery led the front row with 14 total blocks and Abby Beery averaged 3.7 digs per set. Emma Pioske had accumulated 660 assists and led the serving game with 66 aces, an average of 0.9 per set.

Over the five-match stretch from Sept. 28 through Oct. 6, Mariposa went 4-1 overall and 4-0 against league opponents, winning 13 sets and losing four. In its four league victories, the team captured 12 of 14 sets. The sweep of Gustine positioned the Grizzlies for the closing stretch of the league schedule with their championship defense firmly in their own hands.
